I made two attempts:<br><br>One, is using their disk which is distributed with the Book I bought (the Visualization Toolkit and User guide). I did the natural thing and inserted the disk into my disk drive and from there the installation was smooth.<br>
<br>Second, on another computer, I went through <a href="http://vtk.org/VTK/resources/software.html">http://vtk.org/VTK/resources/software.html</a> website . They do mention it, perhaps I should have paid more attention.<br>

As long as they continue to confuse new users, I will continue to advocate for their removal :).
