"Medical Device Interoperability for Improving Patient Safety"
"A Grand Challenge"
Medical devices are essential for the practice of modern medicine.
However, unlike the inter-connected “plug-and-play” world of modern
computers and consumer electronics, most medical devices are designed to
operate independently, and do not employ open networking standards for
data communication or for device control. The integration of individual
medical devices into patient-centric networked systems can
o Provide real-time comprehensive data for the
electronic medical record (EMR)
o Support advances in patient safety and *workflow improvements*
to the benefit of patients throughout the continuum of care. These areas
include the ICU, OR, ED, pre-hospital transport, and the home. Despite
several false starts in the last two decades, recent advances in
standards and technology, user demands, and industry alliances, are
bringing us closer than ever to achieving seamless device integration in
support of improving healthcare.
