This has already been discussed at length on the list and in the
gerrit review. According to this message from Alex, the max length
that worked on a *problem* machine (not all machines demonstrate the
problem) was 51:

The only reasonable compromise (in my opinion) is to introduce a CMake
variable that can be set to allow any path length, so that somebody
building on a machine where "it used to work, so what's the problem?"
may set that variable and avoid the configure error.
Otherwise, I think we should be really strict here so that people
don't waste *hours* getting to the mysterious compile error that makes
no sense. (It says the file doesn't exist, but it actually does
exist...)
