Yes.

Works for a very large number of types including color and other 
multi-channel data.

See /Insight/Utilities/MetaIO/docs for some documentation (new as of 
last week) or /Insight/Utilities/MetaIO/MetaTypes.h for the c++ listing

For example, MET_USHORT designates unsigned shorts.
