Yes.  ITK has not yet been updated for GCC 3.4 as of release 1.8.  Quite 
a few changes will be needed due to the more strict name resolution 
rules.  You should have no problem using a non-system compiler named 
g++-3.3 or something like that to build ITK even if you upgrade your 
system, though.
