I am thinking that perhaps the marching cubes patent is expired.  It
was issued on December 1, 1987 [1], and if it is a utility and plant
patent (is it?) then I think those issued prior to June 8, 1995 expire
17 years from the date of issue.  Which means it would have expired on
Dec 2004.

But I'm not sure....
