Yes, I recall there was somebody working on it. Luis might know more.

Incidentally, there is an HDF5 reader in Paraview : (www.paraview.org)
The library source is here

It is basically just a VTK reader, so there should be no problem pulling 
it out of Paraview into VTK, if you are willing to do the work :)  [ 
..and there's the VTK-ITK pipeline]

It plays well with a parallel pipeline, since one of the intents of 
adding the reader to Paraview was to support AMR visualization such as ( 
http://www.cscs.ch/~jfavre/Projects/vtkAMR/vtkamr.htm )
