I have a further question on the file formats you suggest:

While I find MetaImage format very easy to use, there does not seem to 
be a way to save metadata in MetaImage format. Or am I missing something 
here, especially with the format name: MetaImage? :)

You don't even mention Nrrd format. There must be a reason why... but 
from my stand point, Nrrd saves metadata associated with the input file. 
Would you comment on Nrrd and other file formats that include metadata?
