you could also try this
http://graphics.tudelft.nl/Projects/DeVIDE
it contains ITK, VTK etc. and seems to be a bit more focused on python..
but you could give it a try.

Personally I returned to just using ITK itself (and c++ instead of
python). I found the tutorial presentations on the webpage helpful,
especially this:
http://www.itk.org/CourseWare/Training/GettingStarted-I.pdf
