Just a follow up for future readers - It seems as if when I "flatten image" in Gimp, everything works correctly. It seems odd that there are no errors produced if the image has not been flattened (maybe I would expect "Error, PNGReader cannot handle layered images" or something like that), but at least it is an easy fix.
