[vtkusers] X11 with vtk demos do not run

I have installed a number of recent nightlies
of VTK and want to integrate with X11.
I started by compiling the XMace example.
However when I start the program I get the error:

#/usr/local/lib/vtk/graphics/examplesCxx/XMace
X Error of failed request:  BadWindow (invalid Window
parameter)

I am using Suse6.3 with an openmotif 2.1 motif
set up. I get this on two machines.
One has a matrox G200 with glxmesa installed
the second has an nvidia card with NVidia/Sgi
Opengl (IE real Opengl not mesa).
