Hi Ken, 
My briefly considered vote is for: 
 
 3) Make it an option where the default is to not 
    use lighting (1) but it could be turned on 
 
Generally, I adjust my wireframe grids and meshes to 
behave as if lightling were turned off, but at times 
it is a good effect to have them respond to lights. 
Would [no lighting] be much faster?
