Hmm, I see it black too.  However the standard vtk data examples seem
to work well for me:

A colourful harley: vtkdata/harley-d.3ds

A colourful flamingo: vtkdata/Viewpoint/iflamigm.3ds

Both these render well.  I am not sure why yours shows up completely
black.
