Hi Tim,

Thanks for the points about the TPS.  In the past I had once looked at
some papers by JC Carr which are available for download
(http://aranz.com/).  For example, the following paper is a nice
overview:

I understand that they have worked out a way to deal with large
matrices, but I'll have to look again to see what they did.  At any
rate, I thought I'd point that out in case you're interested.  

Maybe I'll try to implement their techniques... we'll see.
