    MS OS: $100,
    MSVC Compiler: $1000(??),
    Time to get all this working: priceless.

VC++ does not cost $1000, Visual Studio does (C#, VB.Net, J#, ...)
You can get Visual C++ 2003 for less than $90.

I compiled VTK 4.2 with Python 2.3 a few month ago.
I did not encounter any problem.
Be sure to compile in Release.
I used InnoSetup to redistribute my program (I got an exe from my Python code with py2exe).
