Note that running vtk from an X11 shell is only going to create an X11 
window if you specifically compiled VTK with X11 support. Otherwise, 
you're just going to launch a native MacOS X Carbon or Cocoa VTK 
executable. It sounds like this is the case, as X11 executables do not 
require the application packaging required for native MacOS X apps.
