The latest NVIDIA drivers seem to have a bug where destroying gl
contexts might freeze your machine for a few minutes.  I've also seen
the garbled root window.

If you wait long enough, does your machine "unfreeze" again?  Do you
have NVIDIA WAIT() messages in your XFree.log / Xorg.log?  Do you have
NVRM Xid's in your /var/log/messages?  If this is the case, you've
joined a large club of users experiencing this problem.  NVIDIA is
unfortunately oblivious.

Does this sound familiar?
