Hi Jesse,

look at classes vtkAxesActor, vtkOrienationMarkerWidget.
Examples:

depending on which version of vtk you have:
/Hybrid/Testing/Cxx/TestOrientationMarkerWidget.cxx 
or
/Widgets/Testing/Cxx/TestOrientationMarkerWidget.cxx 

and
/Examples/GUI/Tcl/ProbeWithSplineWidget.tcl
