[vtkusers] 3D connected component

Hello.

I am completely new to image analysis and serious need
some help. Here's my problem.

Using Ansys, I made a layered assembly where in each
layer has a group of in cylinders (lying in X-Z plane)
which are oriented in random directions. Several such
layers are stacked in the Y direction. Now I want to
find  the length of connected air empty spaces through
the layers. 

Is there a connected component tool which can do this
? How can I import Ansys file to Vtk? 

Can someone give suggestions?
