[vtkusers] surface plotting

Hi,
I'm completely new to this game, so forgive my ignorance.

I'm trying to use Paraview, which as I understand it reads in vtk  
files.  I'd like to try creating a vtk file from a set of data points  
to be displayed
as a surface plot- i.e. a 3D representation of the function f(x,y).

Do any web pages have simple examples I can learn from?
