[vtkusers] ellipse fitting

Hi All, 

I am desperately trying to find/write code to fit a bunch of points in 3D
space with an ellipse. The real purpose here is to approximate the
cross-section of a vessel with an ellipse. 

There are MATLAB codes for ellipse fitting on the web. However, is there a
VTK function which can fit a set of points with an ellipse? If not, any
suggestions or recommendations?
