[vtkusers] Smooth contouring on a 2D surface

I have created a 2D surface with every node at z coordinate 0.  The surface
shows up fine, and I'm able to put contour lines on the surface based on the
scalars.  However, I would like to have a smooth contour across the surface,
not just lines.  Is there a fast way to do this in VTK?  If so, how is it
done?
