Good thinking.  VBL sync is always on in vtkCocoaRenderWindow.  This is
the responsible snippit:
 [context setValues:&one forParameter:NSOpenGLCPSwapInterval];
Darren, try commenting that line out and rebuilding VTK.  See if
François' theory is correct.
