[vtkusers] error message after running

    ADD_EXECUTABLE( firstprogram  1.cxx)
    TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES ( firstprogram
        vtkRendering vtkGraphics vtkHybrid
        vtkImaging vtkIO vtkFiltering vtkCommon
        )

I bet this is the problem - did you follow this step?
