please note, that the last official vtk release 5.8.0 is also affected 
by this issue.

After applying your patch and rebuilding vtk everything seems to be fine 
now.

(Windows XP SP3 32-bit, vtk 5.8.0, Python 2.7.2, Qt 4.7.4, PyQt 4.8.6, 
VS Express 2008)
