Java woks for me with ITK 3 built with gcc 4.3 (building with gcc 4.4
causes Java to break)

It also works for me with ITK 4. That would not work nicely in Debian,
though. It cannot build with external libjpeg nor gdcm, and installing
its gdcm would break anything that builds against libgdcm.
