I really don't know. I think WinCVS is able to use the local proxy and my 
linux version seems to lack that feature. The standard cvs port is blocked. 
Our admins only open it temporarily so I have to ask each time if I want to 
update my repositories.

I didn't test it but I suspect that the cygwin cvs will have the same 
problem with the firewall. But I just found an option in WinCVS that keeps 
the unix-style line endings (Admin -> Preferences -> Globals -> Checkout 
text files with the Unix LF).
This is a nice solution because it doesn't corrupt the binary files in the 
repository.
