For your "slantwise" display problem, I suggest you check the
dimension of your image.  I remember I had a problem with some of the
example which have a GUI and ask me to input the image information. 
My image size is 66x256x256, but I have to input 65x255x255 to get it
display correctly.  I guess the index starts from 0, and what you
required to input is the maximum value.
