Dear Colleagues,
Research Positions in Vancouver, BC
http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~hamarneh/research_position.pdf
The Graphics, Usability, and Visualization Lab (GrUVi)
and the Medical Image Analysis Lab (MIAL) (http://mial.fas.sfu.ca)
are two rapidly growing synergetic labs at the School of Computing Science
at Simon Fraser University with close ties to local hospitals and
clinicians. We are engaged in several exciting research projects for the
analysis and visualization of medical imaging data, aiming at building
diagnostic tools to be employed in clinical practice through our
collaborators at the Vancouver General Hospital as well as Lions Gate
Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Currently, our group is engaged in projects aiming at testing new drugs
through dynamic functional SPECT imaging. New diagnostic tools need to be
developed for use during patient trials. These tools will perform fast and
accurate dynamic reconstruction algorithms, display and interact with
dynamic medical images in real-time, as well as analyze, segment and
register images by taking advantage of the time-varying nature of the data.
Our group has recently been awarded grants by the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada aimed at developing a diagnostic
medical imaging tool for use in a clinical setting.
Our group is seeking proactive and highly talented young researchers at the
post-doctoral level with proven track record of publications in leading
international journals and conferences. In addition, we have openings for
graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels. Post-doctoral candidates
should be highly creative, have the ability to carry out independent
research but work embedded in a research team, and be endowed with
excellent communication and leadership skills so as to collaborate with
other peers and co-supervise graduate students. The ability to work in a
multidisciplinary team and interact with other disciplines is essential.
All applicants should have a strong background in mathematics, physics, and
computing (e.g. matrix algebra, probability and multivariate statistics,
PDEs), excellent algorithmic and programming skills (e.g. MATLAB C/C++,
ITK, VTK), and demonstrated scientific writing experience.
Candidates with expertise in the following areas will be given particular
attention:
Visualization and graphics: time-varying data visualization, real-time
rendering, GPU programming, user interfaces, clustering analysis,
computational geometry, multi-dimensional scaling, multi-resolution
techniques,
Medical image computing: 2D and 3d image processing, rigid and elastic
multi-modal image registration, model-based image segmentation,
reconstruction from projections, information theoretic approaches to
computer vision
Biomedical engineering: clinical tool specification and quality assurance,
evaluation of tools and methods in clinical environments, system
development, coordination of applied research and technology transfer to
industry and clinical centers
Post-doctoral candidates:
Starting dates are as soon as January 2006; positions will be for a period
of 2 to 3 years. No positions will be considered for less than 2 years.
Salaries are negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience
of the applicants. Interested candidates should submit a letter of purpose
indicating their area of interest, salary expectations, CV including
contact details of 3 referees, and sample publications to Dr. Möller
(torsten at cs.sfu.ca) at their earliest convenience.
PhD or MSc applicants:
Starting dates will be September 2006. The applicants will have to apply
online through the School of Computing Science (details at
www.cs.sfu.ca/gradpgm). The application deadline is Feb 1, 2006. Please
notify Dr. Möller (torsten at cs.sfu.ca) about your intentions.
