Hi Jonh,

You might want to take a look at 3D Slicer (http://www.slicer.org), an
open source software based on VTK and ITK for visualization and
analysis of medical images. Among other things, it implements volume
rendering:

You can try it to see if it does what you need, and you can also look
at the source code to see how volume rendering is implemented. Feel
