I would recommend you reading the book by Prof. Bart Ter Haar Romeny.

Front-End Vision and Multi-Scale Image Analysis:
Multi-scale Computer Vision Theory and Applications, written in Mathematica

I would say it is the fastest way  to get  answers  to your questions.
