INVITATION FOR APPLICATIONS
FIMM is currently seeking a
Senior Researcher in Biomedical Image Analysis
The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international
research institute in
Helsinki (www.fimm.fi) focusing on human genomics and personalized
medicine. FIMM
integrates molecular medicine research, technology center and biobanking
infrastructures
“under one roof” and thereby promotes translational research and adoption
of personalized
medicine in health care. FIMM researchers are involved in several grand
challenge projects,
such as the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in
personalized health
and medical interventions, development of individualized cancer medicine,
and novel
diagnostics via imaging of tissue and cells. The disease areas of interest
for the 15 research
groups cover cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurology, and viral
infections.
Description
The position is within the PREDECT consortium, an Innovative Medicines
Initiatives (IMI)
funded partnership with 21 laboratories collaborating in a Public-Private
partnership developing
new models for preclinical evaluation of drug efficacy in common cancers
(http://www.predect.eu/). Our interdisciplinary research team is seeking a
senior scientist to
develop computer vision methods for image analysis of cell and tissue
samples. The ideal
candidate must have strong background in image analysis as well as machine
learning and an
interest in working closely with biomedical scientists. The applicant
should have outstanding
programming skills and a good mathematical background. The scientist will
also supervise our
Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers.
Qualification and experience
•
The optimal candidate should have a PhD degree (e.g., in computer science,
mathematics, physics, or engineering) and at least four years of
postdoctoral or equivalent
experience as an independent researcher.
•
Experience of image analysis projects within the biomedical domain is an
advantage.
•
A solid background with hands-on experience in planning and executing image
analysis projects is essential.
•
The position especially necessitates understanding and practical knowledge
of
image segmentation, object recognition and classification.
•
The senior scientist must have strong analytical skills and mathematical
foundation.
•
Knowledge of programming in MATLAB, as well as lower level programming
languages is an advantage.
•
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills are required and
the
candidate must have the capability to independently write clear scientific
reports, papers,
and proposals.
•
The candidate should have good interpersonal communication skills and be
able
to work independently as well as part of a team and supervision experience
is a benefit.

contract will be offered initially through January 2016.
Application should include a one-page cover letter summarizing the
applicant’s motivation and
a CV with a list of publications sent to Johan Lundin, Research Director, at
johan.lundin at helsinki.fi no later than the 9th of August 2013.
FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine,
composed of the
European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centers for molecular
medicine in
Norway, Sweden and Denmark. At the national level, FIMM is a joint research
institute of the
University of Helsinki (primary host), the Hospital District of Helsinki
and Uusimaa, the National
Institute for Health and Welfare, and VTT Technical Research Centre of
Finland.
