[vtkusers] Assign Scalars to Dataset According to another Polygonal Surface

Hi,
Now in my problem, i want to clip one dataset  by  an extruded surface(
polydata
representation) .I am  trying to assign scalars to the dataset
in the way where the suface intersects th edataset will be assigned a value
,and
one side of the surface  greater than the value ,other side less than the
value .
then i can clip with  the assigned value .
But how to assign values right ? that is ,How can i decide where the surface
intersects
the dataset ? any suggestions?
btw., my dataset is one bat's ear shape ,i clip it just for visual purpose
,so dont want
to be very exact .
